International Student Virtual Kidnappings - Is Your Student at Risk?

Police agencies across the country increasingly come up against criminal schemes that largely target International Students. One such phenomena emerged in the summer of 2017 that were initially reported as kidnapping events. Members of a student’s family residing offshore contacted Canadian police advising they received ransom demands for the return of their captured child. In most cases, their child was an international student studying in the Greater Vancouver Area. Upon their recovery, police learned the victims were deceived by a sophisticated telecommunication fraud to participate in their own kidnapping to extort their families. This session will explore this type of incident as a case-study to illuminate some of the elaborate frauds that may entangle institutions and their international students while beginning to identify strategies to help ensure students are aware, informed and safe.
