International Student Data – Can we Really Count on it?

Different sources of international student data can appear to give conflicting reports of the same activity. For example, Australia reported hosting 497,176 incoming students in 2015, while UNESCO reported we hosted only 294,438 students. In fact, these seemingly contradictory reports are both correct, it just takes some investigation to appreciate what they are really reporting. This presentation describes the purpose of different data sources and how they capture quite different modes of student mobility. Use of different data sources illustrates the diversity of the global education market and enables more effective evaluation of the outcomes of different international education programs.
