Words matter. Rethinking the term “international student” in student services

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The term “international student” has been created by education institutions to identify students who have a different legal status and differential tuition fees, but this distinction may have an effect on how these students are able to integrate and make connections with other students. Is the term “international student” still relevant beyond an admissions category or are there other ways and other words that are more relevant? When thinking of student support, does “international student” adequately capture all students who would benefit from the support services offered? Drawing from immigration theory, discuss and explore with peers how the words we use shape the imaginaries of others.
