Ethically-Based North-South Undergraduate Student Mobility Programs in British Columbia

North-South study mobility programs (i.e., education abroad, serving learning, field schools, internships as part of academic studies, and cooperative education) offer immense opportunities for fostering cross-cultural understanding, mutual learning, and capacity building for students, as well as for partners. The asymmetrical nature of the relationship between universities and the host communities often raises concerns around non-reciprocity and shallow student reflection, to name a few. This panel will share findings from emerging research on ethically-based North-South student mobility programs, and expertise from practitioners about designing pre-departure, on-site and post-return programming and training for deeper models of social justice and solidarity.
