The Role of Failure in Achieving Success

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

International students are under enormous pressure to succeed, from their family, government, peer group and themselves. It could be argued that our institutions approach to “celebrate success” exacerbate this pressure, and makes it harder when they fail to recover and eventually succeed. Since failure is part of life, an essential way to figure out what does not work, why do we stigmatize it and teach students to avoid it. Instead we propose to change the narrative and plan for failure, recognize its role in the learning process. At VIU and UBC we are starting dialogue towards that goal, we’ll present what is being done and the theory behind it.
