Pre-conference Workshop III: Education Abroad: Partnering for Growth with Industry, Faculty, Government, Alumni and External Providers ($99)

National agendas, including the CBIE Learning Beyond Borders, seek to exponentially grow participation in Education Abroad and this objective is firmly embedded within institutional international strategies. This workshop explores the capacity of institutions to respond to this call for growth and how new opportunities for students can be created to enable wider and broader participation – with a focus on engaging external providers. Global trends show an increasing demand for short-term programs in contrast to the traditional semester exchange. This shift in student interest impacts on institutional capacity to deliver education abroad, the education abroad office skill set in program generation and networks required to deliver a variety of short-term options.

Developing strategies to grow education abroad participants will explore growth opportunities through:
• relationships with external service providers (e.g. commercial programs)
• support for faculty and teaching staff in development of programs
• the role of credit and non-credit experiences (volunteering, internships, co-op programs)
• institutional partners (e.g. Alumni and Industry Engagement offices)
• advocacy and alignment with key stakeholders (e.g. Chambers of Commerce and Industry)

While challenging the status quo this presents exciting opportunities to expand the role for education abroad across institutions. This workshop will take post-secondary and K-12 education abroad practitioners through steps to increase program options drawing on international best practice, insights
and learning from other global (national) strategies including the UK, US, EU, Latin America and Australia.
